To enhance the training experience of graduate students and post-doctoral fellows in BCMP, the department offers the activities and resources listed below. These are available to trainees whose PIs have primary appointments in BCMP. To take full advantage of BCMP training opportunities, make sure you are on the departmental listserv (contact Kristen_Parker@hms.harvard.edu).
Present Your Work
If you would like to present your data in a departmental data club talk but did not obtain a slot during the academic year, extra dates are available in the summer on a first-come, first-served basis. To request a summer slot, ask your PI to endorse your request by emailing Kristen_Parker@hms.harvard.edu in the BCMP office, who will schedule your talk and assign faculty mentors for the practice talk.
Acquire a Faculty Mentor
To help our post-doctoral fellows obtain broad scientific and career advice, the department offers a faculty mentor program. To participate, contact the PI of your choice directly (usually chosen on the basis of common scientific interest) to set up a first meeting. Typically, fellows will meet once or twice per year with their mentor. All BCMP faculty are enthusiastic about serving as mentors, so please don't hesitate to contact them!
Meet the Faculty
To promote interactions between faculty and trainees, the BCMP trainee committee sponsors monthly lunches in which a BCMP PI gives a chalk talk on their work and career. This is a great opportunity for trainees to learn about work going on in the department, experience a chalk talk, and gain career advice. An email will be sent in advance of each month’s lunch, and the first 25 fellows or graduate students to sign up can participate.
Practice Your Job Talk
Before going on the job market, it is important to practice your seminar and chalk talk for an audience of non-specialists. Our faculty are eager to help. Feel free to schedule a practice talk with 2-3 faculty of your choice. A resource for applying to a job in academia can be found here. You can also click here for more info regarding scheduling a practice talk.
