Emergencies

For safety related emergencies (medical, fire or evacuation, biological or blood spill, radiation spill, chemical spill or gas leak), please refer to the Harvard Longwood Emergency Response Guide.

Accident Reporting and Investigation

When a workplace accident (or near miss) occurs, employees must report them to their supervisor immediately and fill out a Harvard Accident Report. Supervisors play a critical role in investigating root causes for the accident to prevent re-occurrence. Lab Safety Contacts should alert Rob Loughran of any occurrence in their lab. Please refer to the E.H.&S. web page by clicking here.

EHS Recommendations for Minors in Labs

Prior to any minor (i.e.: under the age of 18 years old with no minors under the age of 16 years of age permitted in labs), entering Harvard's research or instructional laboratory facilities, EH&S recommends that the sponsoring department ensure completion, (by the Faculty Sponsor, Parent/Guardian, Minor), of the following forms available from the University's Office of General Counsel (http://ogc.harvard.edu/pages/model-documents). Building Evacuation

When the fire alarm sounds everyone must evacuate the building and assemble in the designated area (see map)

Evacuation is mandatory and those who do not evacuate may be subject to arrest.

Do not congregate at the exit or near the building.

Proceed directly to the assembly area.

Please report missing or unaccounted for colleagues, or those in need of evacuation assistance, to the person in charge (e.g. Police or Fire Department).

Do not re-enter the building until instructed by a uniformed official.

Do not enter any building that has the fire emergency strobes flashing. This is an indication that the building is still in alarm. When it is safe to enter, the strobes will stop flashing.
