The Department of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology (BCMP) at Harvard Medical School is looking for a Research Operations Manager (ROM) to join the administrative team of the Department. The ROM (reporting to the Executive Director) will manage all aspects of department facility operations to enable safe laboratory research. The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic team supporting and working closely with the Department Executive Director of Research Administration to ensure that the Department runs smoothly. In this role, the individual will bring strong communication and interpersonal skills to tackling day-to-day building and lab operations, as well as special projects that arise like laboratory moves or closures. They will be organized, be able to prioritize and manage multiple issues or projects at the same time and be able to provide stability and reassurance to our labs in the face of unexpected events. The individual will establish strong working relationships with those in Department labs, from faculty to trainees to staff, and with those across HMS and beyond in groups that this role interfaces with.

The ROM is responsible for supporting general Department facility operations including safety, security (including information security), laboratory setup/relocation/closure, building management, and custodial services. They will also serve as a primary liaison for the department to relevant internal and external groups within the scope of the role. The responsibilities of the role include:

  • Working with Department Laboratories and HMS Facilities to report and resolve building issues, maintain building infrastructure, and anticipate emerging concerns
  • Effectively communicating with and supporting labs in navigating building maintenance and facilities shut-down events; independently working with Facilities to coordinate timing of events as needed to minimize disruption
  • Keeping the Executive Director of Research Administration informed on the status of department operations and helping to develop strategies or plans to address any operational issues
  • Managing and maintaining Department stockroom and common Department equipment, including maintenance/repair, management of service contracts, and ensuring compliance with University and Federal policies pertaining to the proper purchasing, management, fabrication, transfer, sale, trade-in, and disposal of equipment
  • Acting as the Department safety officer and liaison to EH&S, and in this capacity communicating policy and overseeing lab compliance for all EH&S policies (including safety training, satellite accumulation area management, evacuation planning and training, chemical and hazardous waste disposal, equipment disposal, controlled substance regulation compliance, and COMS application submissions.)
  • Acting as the Department information security liaison to IT to communicate School information security requirements and helping labs to stay compliant
  • Working with the Department finance office, sales representatives, and the School Procurement Office to manage the cost-effective purchase of common lab supplies and equipment, negotiate and maintain service contracts and handle equipment repairs
  • Working across HMS units and with other department ROMs as needed and representing the department at School-wide facility meetings
  • Assisting with the set-up, move, or closing of research labs
  • Other duties as required

Because of the nature of the role in supporting on-campus research operations, in-person presence is expected, although flexibility in the specific hours on-site is possible. As unexpected events can happen in operations, the role requires being on-call 24 hours/day and 7 days/week in the event that issues arise that require immediate attention.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree or equivalent required, with five or more years of related experience including at least 2 years of experience in facilities, laboratory management, or related areas.

A background in science is preferred. Basic computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office Suite are required.
