Marie Bao, PhD

As the Executive Director of Research Administration for BCMP, Marie works in partnership with the Department Chair to support department strategy, faculty and trainee development, and research. She also manages department space planning, research operations, and departmental processes and policies relating to personnel and events.  She serves on HMS-wide committees as a department representative and acts as a liaison to central HMS administration. With her previous experience in scientific publishing, she also advises faculty and trainees on manuscripts, grants, and fellowships, and teaches courses on scientific writing.

Prior to joining HMS in 2019, Marie was the Editor-in-Chief of Developmental Cell, part of the Cell Press family of scientific journals.  She worked at Cell Press for 11 years, starting at Cell as a reviews editor before joining Developmental Cell as a scientific editor.  Marie received her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of California, San Francisco, where she did her thesis research with Hiten Madhani.  She received her Bachelors of Science degrees in Molecular and Cellular Biology and in Chemistry, with a minor in English, from the University of California, Berkeley.
